چکیده
Abstract. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic pollutants in fine particulate matter (PM) long known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic effects, but much is unknown about the importance of local remote sources for PAH levels observed population-dense urban environments. A year-long sampling campaign Athens, Greece, where more than 150 samples were analyzed 31 PAHs a wide range chemical markers, was combined with positive matrix factorization (PMF) constrain temporal variability, sources, risk associated PAHs. It found that biomass burning (BB), source mostly present during wintertime intense pollution events (observed 18 % measurement days 2017), led 7 times higher other seasons as important annual mean concentrations (31 %) diesel oil (33 gasoline (29 sources. The contribution non-local although limited on an basis (7 %), increased summer, becoming comparable combined. fraction (12 members included PMF analysis) BB also linked health compared accounting almost half potential (43 %). This can result large number excess cancer cases due BB-related high PM urges immediate action reduce residential emissions areas facing similar issues.

Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Ambient Urban Air
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHS) have been determined in the atmosphere of Isfahan, Iran. Airborne particulate matter was sampled using a high-volume air sampler at roof-top level (~6m). Extraction of PAHS from airborne particulate matter has been performed using SFE system and the relationship between the extraction temperature and the recovery of PAHS</su...
متن کاملExposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons among Dutch children.
We determined the urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-HP) concentration and the creatinine-adjusted 1-HP concentration in 644 randomly selected Dutch children, aged 1-6 years and living in five areas with roughly different levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil and ambient air. The presence of other factors that might influence the exposure to PAHs was studied using a questionnaire. T...
متن کاملMonitoring of environmental exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: a review
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large group of organic compounds with two or more fused aromatic rings. They have a relatively low solubility in water, but are highly lipophilic. Most of the PAHs with low vapour pressure in the air are adsorbed on particles. When dissolved in water or adsorbed on particulate matter, PAHs can undergo photodecomposition when exposed to ultraviolet l...
متن کاملOccupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during Diesel combustion.
Identification and determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Diesel exhaust in the working environment and assessment of workers' occupational exposure to these suspected human carcinogens were the aim of this experimental investigation. The range of exposure factors calculated on the basis of 9 individual PAH concentrations determined in personal air samples shows that time-a...
متن کاملMitochondrial DNA copy number and exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
BACKGROUND Increased mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) is a biologic response to mtDNA damage and dysfunction, predictive of lung cancer risk. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are established lung carcinogens and may cause mitochondrial toxicity. Whether PAH exposure and PAH-related nuclear DNA (nDNA) genotoxic effects are linked with increased mtDNAcn has never been evaluated. M...
